Millom Ironworks Local Nature Reserve
On June 22 there was a celebration to open the Millom Ironworks Local Nature Reserve.
During the previous six months work has been carried out on the former slag bank area. Trees have been planted, pathways constructed and a viewing platform created. A commemorative stone and plaque were positioned at the summit where marvellous views of the surrounding area can be enjoyed.
The Holborn Hill Royal Brass Band Junior Section played at the Albert Street Entrance, while a crowd of enthusiastic supporters gathered.
Mr. Peter Connolly, Mayor of Copeland and Mr Frank McPhillips, Mayor of Millom made speeches recognising the efforts put in to get the project off the ground and emphasising what a valuable facility it is not only for the nature species in it, but especially for the people of Millom as a peaceful recreation area.
After cutting the ribbon at the entrance, Mayor McPhillips unveiled the commemorative plaque at the viewing platform, joined by pupil representatives from Millom School.
Walks were then taken through the reserve and Judy Palmer, Cumbria County Council Ecologist, Mike Young, English Nature and Jack Park, Millom Town Councillor gave talks about the interesting species, habitats and history of the site.
Afterwards a light buffet was provided in a marquee at the Duddon Estuary Youth Hostel adjoining the new Nature Reserve, where all those involved in the celebration could reflect on this historic moment and enjoy the panoramic estuary views.
