Escape the crowds and discover a peaceful corner of Cumbria’s Western
Lake District. Millom and Haverigg are situated on the south-west Cumbrian coast
just outside the Lake District National Park in an area known for its award-winning
beaches and superb scenery.
Formerly an iron ore mining town, Millom now boasts an RSPB Reserve with three species of nesting terns and a watersports arena; and the regenerating site of the ironworks has become a local nature reserve providing habitat to some nationally rare plant and animal species. Visit in early summer for a spectacular display of orchids, and the chance to glimpse the elusive natterjack toad.
Haverigg is a tranquil village with miles of uncrowded sandy beach, a great children’s adventure playground and beach café (open seasonally). A recent addition to the foreshore is a magnificent sculpture by internationally-renowned sculptor Josefina de Vasconcellos, dedicated to the bravery of the men and women of the UK’s inshore rescue teams.
The 100 years that followed the discovery of iron saw Millom and Haverigg develop rapidly, and amongst the families who came to work in the new town was the Nicholson family. Their son Norman lived almost his entire life in Millom and became a renowned speaker and writer. His poetry and prose describe the varied aspects of life around Cumbria and gained him the Queens medal for poetry and an OBE. A blue plaque marks the “over the shop” house where he lived, many of his works are kept in the Nicholson room at Millom Library and there is a memorial stained glass window in St George’s church designed to illustrate some of his best known poems.
A wide variety of activities are available to suit every taste - golf, horse-riding, hill-walking, waterskiing, fishing and more - while the area’s rich heritage can be explored through Millom Folk Museum and the RAF Millom Museum. A Hidden Britain Centre Trail has been developed to help visitors discover and interpret the attractions that make this area unique.
